If Your DMs Don’t Make You Money, Here’s What You’re Doing Wrong

If you own a business, EVERY person who’s in your presence for longer than two minutes should know about it. 

And if you’re reading this and asking “Why?” that’s the wrong question…

The better question is “Why NOT?”

Every single time you engage with another human being—whether in-person or virtually—presents an opportunity to raise awareness of your business. 

Let’s not pretend that brand awareness isn’t a *key* factor in growing a business.

It’s why organizations dump millions of dollars into Super Bowl commercials, billboard placements in sports arenas, and brand placements on athletes’ uniforms. 

We’re so comfortable seeing these brands plastered all over our television screens that we don’t recognize it as brand awareness anymore—it’s just part of the show. 

When people see you, they should see your business logo.

When people talk to you, they should hear a reference to your business. 

When people come to your house and ask for the WiFi name and password, it should remind them of your business.

In other words, SHOW UP. 

Be unapologetically ubiquitous.

When you talk about your business, don’t do so in whispers—say it with your whole chest.

Your customers aren’t going to magically land in your DMs. It’s your responsibility to let them know that your business exists. 

This is the same when it comes to email marketing. 

It has the highest ROI in the digital marketing space (for every $1 spent on email marketing, you can expect to earn $36 in return). 

Yet, very few Black entrepreneurs take the time to write and send emails on a consistent basis—or even worse, we just keep all of our conversations in the DM instead of moving it to email where we own and control the database of contacts.

If we want to change the financial outlook for Black people around the world, that means we have to SHOW UP in the inbox, too.
