As creators, tech reviewers, and storytellers, we know that the magic of filmmaking lies in how visuals, sound, and raw emotion align to create something unforgettable. This Black Girl is a shining example—a stunning visual narrative directed by New Orleans filmmaker Justen Williams, breathing life into Tank and the Bangas’ soulful anthem.
What started as a lyrical celebration of Black women’s beauty, brilliance, and resilience evolved into a cinematic masterpiece that seamlessly blends cinematography, spoken word, and choreography. The result? A powerful reminder of what happens when creativity meets purpose.
A Creative Vision Rooted in Authenticity
“This Black Girl” isn’t just a music video—it’s a visual story designed to elevate and honor Black women in all their multifaceted glory. Tank’s lyrics laid the foundation, but it was Williams’ documentary-style direction that gave it dimension, placing Black women center stage, not as tropes but as muses, artists, mothers, and visionaries.
Shot with a careful eye for light, texture, and movement, the film becomes a layered experience where every frame feels intentional. The cinematography captures joy, vulnerability, and pride—delivering a visual language that mirrors the song’s jazzy, soulful energy.
The Technical Collaboration: Where Art Meets Gear
From a technical standpoint, Williams’ approach leaned heavily into natural light, dynamic camera movement, and crisp color grading to give the project a timeless feel.
- Cameras & Lenses: A blend of cinema and mirrorless cameras were used to capture both wide cinematic shots and intimate moments. The Sony FX3, Fujifilm XT3, DJI Osmo Pocket 3, and Sony A7 IV. Tamron and Sony Lenses.
- Lighting: Natural light was amplified by a talented gaffer and grip team, creating rich tones that celebrated various shades of melanin on screen.
- Sound & Editing: Seamlessly synced to Tank’s vocals, the post-production process emphasized clean transitions while honoring the track’s rhythm.
For creators and tech heads—this is a masterclass in balancing technical precision with emotional storytelling.
A Cast of Powerhouses: Every Face, a Story
What truly sets this project apart is its incredible cast of Black women—dancers, poets, artists, and creators—each contributing their unique energy to the story.
Featured talents include Jazz, Chipo Kandake, Jelly Joseph, Brittany Polk, and many more, with Phoenix Scott representing the next generation of brilliance.
Their collective presence transforms the screen into a living, breathing tribute to Black femininity.
BTS Spotlight: Capturing the Magic
Behind the scenes, Aloysius Ballard (that’s me!) had the honor of documenting the creative process—watching choreography sessions, intimate storytelling moments, and the pure joy of collaborative filmmaking.
Seeing the synergy between director, cast, and crew firsthand was a reminder that This Black Girl isn’t just a project—it’s a love letter.
