Tougaloo Futurism in Motion: Becoming “Loo City”
Tougaloo College, a beacon of academic excellence and civil rights legacy, has once again positioned itself firmly at the intersection of health equity and higher education. In a powerful affirmation of its long-standing commitment to community health and transformative learning, Tougaloo has been renewed as the Training and Education Center (TEC) for the Jackson Heart Study (JHS) for the next 10 years.
This isn’t just a continuation—it’s a launch into the future. Welcome to Loo City.
Progress Meets 10 More Years of Purpose
In a time when Black communities continue to face disproportionate health disparities, especially in heart health, Tougaloo’s renewed role in the JHS represents both legacy and futurism. The College will continue to provide research training and academic preparation for students underrepresented in STEM and biomedical sciences—especially those determined to impact health outcomes in Black and Brown communities.
Since 2000, the Jackson Heart Study has been a national model for community-based research in cardiovascular health among African Americans. With Tougaloo at the helm of training and education, the pipeline of scholars, researchers, and health equity leaders has remained both steady and strong.
Tougaloo Futurism: The Loo Is Leading
This renewal isn’t just about research—it’s about renaissance. Tougaloo has always been more than a campus. It’s now becoming an innovation city, powered by Black brilliance, health justice, and academic futurism. We’re calling it “Loo City.”
This future-forward vision includes:
- Next-generation research training programs
- Student-led community health engagement
- Pipeline development from K–PhD in health sciences
- Continued expansion of public health, STEM, and social justice collaborations
Tougaloo is building a future where the zip code no longer determines the life span, and where young Black scholars are equipped to dismantle inequity with data, innovation, and purpose.
The Legacy Continues. The Future Begins.
As the JHS Training and Education Center, Tougaloo will continue to:
- Cultivate culturally competent researchers
- Foster inter-institutional partnerships with Jackson State and UMMC
- Empower underrepresented students with tools to thrive in science and health fields
- Strengthen the voice of Black communities in national health conversations
This work stands on the shoulders of pioneers, but it is planted firmly in tomorrow.

The Jackson Heart Study is the largest single-site, prospective epidemiologic study of cardiovascular disease in African Americans.
